Acupuncture can support IVF
How can acupuncture help you? It can
- Help the ovaries mature the eggs. Acupuncture can help encourage blood flow to the ovaries. Combined with a good diet, appropriate nutritional supplementation and sufficient rest the ovaries have the ingredients they need to help them do their job.
- Support the development of good quality eggs/ sperm. Whilst the DNA in the eggs cannot be influenced (since this was programmed when you were an embryo), it is thought that acupuncture could work by improving energy production within the egg. This aids cell division once the egg has been fertilised.
- Relieve the side effects of IVF drugs. Anger, anxiety, palpitations, insomnia can be common side effects from the IVF regime. Acupuncture can help you relax and keep your emotions in perspective.
- Help overcome “stage fright” when sperm have to be produced for fertilisation. If you have a low libido or you find it difficult to produce sperm “on command”, an acupuncture treatment (using needles placed in your back) the day before can help. For more information on male fertility treatment, have a look at the “Having a baby” page.
- Help improve the growth of the endometrium (the uterine lining) to its optimal thickness. If the uterine lining is too thin it could be the cause of a failed IVF cycle or a miscarriage. Again diet, nutirional supplements and rest will also contribute to this.
- Boost the embryo transfer. Tthe “Paulus Protocol” can be used the day before implantation and on the day, after implantation. It can help the endometrium hold onto the egg.
Improving your general health can take 4 - 6 months (sometimes longer). If you want to prepare to use IVF and want to enhance the vitality of yourself, your partner, your eggs and sperm, then the more time you can allow for this the better.
If you have completed one IVF cycle and want to prepare for another, then acupuncture can still help, even if you have less time than 4 – 6 months. If you are struggling with the emotional impact of an unsuccessful cycle, we can work on “calming the mind”. Or if you want to just clear out the IVF drugs from your system and boost your health as much as possible before the next round acupuncture can help with this too.

Take the time for acupuncture treatment to support you through the IVF process. |
What does it cost? How long is a treatment?
The initial consultation and treatment is £50. Follow up treatments are £40. They take about 45 mins – 1 hour. Fertility problems are usually due to deep seated issues and cannot be "fixed overnight". Acupuncture is a gentle treatment which has a cumulative effect, hence the need for treatment over several months (or whatever time you have available if you are between cycles).
