Needles and new beginnings: overcoming chronic shoulder pain with acupuncture

Annya 2- mediumFor a number years, I’d been trying to fix an on-off pain in my shoulder. It would improve for a bit, but frustratingly the pain and restricted movement would come back again.

I had a feeling the pain was triggered by stress from my managerial day job. It interfered with working at a computer, with teaching my evening yoga classes, as well as making it more difficult to sleep.

Having tried various exercises and stretches to help myself, none were providing lasting relief.  I didn’t want to use painkillers all the time, so when I came across a magazine article about acupuncture as pain relief, I decided to give it a try.

My first session was both intriguing and reassuring. The acupuncturist, a kind and knowledgeable professional, took the time to explain the principles behind acupuncture. She detailed how it involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body to stimulate natural healing.

Initially apprehensive about the idea of needles, the acupuncturist’s gentle approach and thorough explanation eased my concerns. Lying on the treatment table, a sense of calm washed over me, something I’d not experienced for quite a while.

Over the next few weeks, as I continued with regular acupuncture sessions my shoulder steadily improved. Moving without feeling restricted, stiff or sore was becoming the norm again  Lying on my side to sleep felt more comfortable too.

Beyond the physical relief, was a renewed sense of well-being and balance which made me think about training to become an acupuncturist myself. If I could help others feel the same what better job could there be??!
